WindRamp
Optimise power forecasts of offshore parks
Observer-supported prediction of grid congestions and possible feed-in of offshore wind energy for operational grid management and trading processes
Strong changes in wind speed in periods of less than thirty minutes are called wind ramps. These short-term changes in the energy supply, which are difficult to predict precisely, can cause problems for grid operators and electricity traders: If turbines in offshore wind farms suddenly generate significantly more or less electricity than predicted, this can have an impact on the load on the electricity grid. In addition, balancing payments may become due and balancing energy must be used.
In the WindRamp project, energy & meteo systems is cooperating with partners from research as well as measurement and laser technology to map upcoming wind ramps in a short-term forecast. For this purpose, the wind field several kilometres in front of the wind farm is observed with powerful lidar devices (lidar = light detection and ranging) by measuring distances and wind speeds with laser pulses. The resulting model of the incoming wind ramp is used by energy & meteo systems to further optimise the existing short-term forecasts. Here, weather models, power measurements and wind fields from lidar observations are optimally combined. The requirements for such a forecast are being developed in cooperation with grid operators and wind aggregators and will be applied in an operational phase at the end of the three-year project term.
The joint project, which was completed in December 2023, is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. It was coordinated by the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg and carried out together with the partners DLR-Institut für Vernetzte Energiesysteme, Abacus Laser, Metek Meteorologische Messtechnik, TenneT TSO, EWE Trading und wpd offshore solutions.
